Watching a film directed by Clint Eastwood is like having a lesson in direction and Gran Torino is no exception. Not as slick or dynamic as Bay or the Scott’s and not as gritty or hard hitting as Mann or Nolan. Eastwood’s style is straightforward and subtle, yet considered. Letting the characters and the story do the talking.
My folks would describe Gran Torino; ‘as a nice little film’, and it is. A Sunday afternoon of a movie, just the right mix of depth and light heartedness with an underlying real world message of redemption and change.
There is no gimmick or technical lure in this flick. There’s no performance of a lifetime or difficult adaptation material to contend with. It’s just a good, well-written, competently directed film. Seeing a characters point of view slowly change through new experiences. Loved it.
A review I read said it was like Dirty Harry had retired and moved to the mid west. Eastwood is the original bad ass and now he’s got a hart and a pretty car.
