I vaguly remember somone mentioning that they were remaking this one with Keanu Reeves and thinking; 'it might be okay if they get him to play the robot.' Here is a trail for the remake of the 1951 Sc-fi classic, The Day The Earth Stood Still. The trail for the original has much more menace and a great mass hysteria feel - see below. Also I see that the director of the new one, Scott Derrickson is co writing the screenplay for The Birds, a remake of Hitchcock's 1963 master piece. Is nothing sacred? Are we going to have to wait untill everything has been remade? Are there no new ideas? Judging by The Happening and Handcock, no 'good' new ideas. Also there seems to be no sign of Gort - the terrifing giant still robot that accompanys Klaatu. You get a glimpse of his death ray at the end, I hope they haven't 'modernized' him too much. Reeves seems wooden, but so was Michael Rennie in the original, so it might work. I like Jennifer Connelly as an actor, Dark City and the Dark Water remake were okay. Lot's of Dark going on there. As for Derrickson, The Exorcism of Emily Rose was rather good, scary and engaging.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Roll on Christmas.
